The Basics of Tent Camping

 By: My Camping Tents
Posted: Oct 23, 2010

 ]]>

Tent camping is an activity my family has been involved in for many years. Our camping trips combine fishing, hiking, and swimming to the regular camp site life of cutting wood, starting a fire, food preparation, cooking, eating, games, and just relaxing. We’ve made a lot of good memories from our camping trips. We’ve always gone up in the mountains and found great camping hiking spots either at designated campgrounds that offer water for washing, and some type of restroom (out house or rest-stop type), and garbage cans, or places where there were no creature comforts at all. We always camped by streams, lakes, or rivers during the summer months.

If you intend to have a successful camping experience, planning is important. As a retired Army Airborne Ranger, who has had to live out of a ruck (back pack) for many days, having the right camping gear when you’re camping will make the experience that much more enjoyable.
The best camping tents for families are tents that have separate rooms. Since we have two children our tent has three rooms — my wife and I sleep in a room, the kids sleep in a room, and the entrance room is for dressing and storage. We use a combination of foam and inflatable mattresses. We use rectangular sleeping bags that you can zip together for the wife and I, and the kids have their own individual bags. Bring extra blankets for chilly nights. We also use poncho liners for the kids to use inside their sleeping bags. We’ve had our tent for over 15 years and average 2-3 camping trips each summer.

We also take a couple of tarps. We use one tarp on the ground under the tent and make it long enough to have about 8 feet in front of the tent door. We take our shoes/boots off outside to keep the inside of the tent as clean as possible. We bring a small folding stool to place outside the tent door to help with putting shoes on. The second tarp is used to cover our kitchen/cooking gear if it rains.

We use two camping stoves – one uses propane (which we mainly use for heating water for hot drinks and washing) and the other is a 2 burner stove and uses fuel, which does not burn as hot. We use this one for cooking bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc. Bring a couple of frying pans, and camping pots/pans – remember to bring a spatula if you’re going to cook pancakes or eggs.

We always start a fire in the morning(for warmth) and in the evening, for cooking. Bring a collapsible grate to put over the fire if you plan on laying anything on it to cook or heat up. We make pointed sticks by cutting small branches from nearby trees for the polish dogs or bratwurst – so bring a couple of knives. We cut our own wood from the dead branches and logs you find near the campground. We bring an axe and small saw with a folding blade to get the wood the right size to fit in the fire pit.

Here are the basics of camping gear to bring:

Tent with rain fly, tarp, tent stakes, and hammer

Sleeping gear to include mattresses – inflatable or foam, blankets (poncho liners), and pillows

Cooking/kitchen equipment – camping stoves, folding camping table, frying pans, pots to heat water and cook in, paper plates, bowls, and utensils, napkins, paper towels, wash rags, towels, cutlery, large spoons, tongs, can opener, lighters, tin foil, plastic wash basin, scouring pads, disposable wipes, detergent, plastic storage bags, and trash bags. We pack this in see-though plastic tubs with folding lids. We pack most of our non-cooler food in these types of containers, too.

Fire pit necessities – if you plan on scrounging your own wood from the forest floor – axe, folding saw, gloves, newspaper for fire starting, lighter, a folding grate (campfire tripod), and a folding shovel.

Personal hygiene – soap, wash cloths, towels (dark in color), shampoo and shower shoes (if your campground has a shower), toothpaste, and toilet paper.

Safety equipment – flashlights, lantern, spare batteries, cell phone with car charger, map of the area, first aid kit, compass or GPS, and plenty of drinking water.

These are some of the items you’ll need to have an enjoyable camping trip. After your first trip, you’ll be able to fine-tune your list. Tent camping takes a lot of prep work, but it is so worth it for the memories you’ll always have.

Article by Barry Bowen

Camping is becoming more popular for family vacations and even more so, Australia is becoming a very popular family location for vacation. So why not experience both of these at the same time and go camping in Australia.

There are many benefits of buying a tent rather than paying for hotels. The first would be the cost. Everyone knows and everyone appreciates the cost of paying for a vacation, whether that was to be a vacation with friends or family. The price is still something we would never dream of spending. When camping, the cost is much less. A hotel room would cost on average per night, whereas a tent can be purchased for 0 and then a camping spot can be rented for various prices depending on which site you use. This ultimately works out cheaper, which leaves more spending money which is especially useful if you wish to buy souvenirs of your holiday.

Another benefit of a camping vacation is that tents are re-usable. Once you have purchased a tent, this can be used for more than one vacation. Making vacations in the future cheaper too.

Benefits of camping in Australia also include the educational value in it. When camping there is a high chance you will encounter new species of insect and often see a clearer sky allowing stargazing to take place. Children can learn from these activities and it can also bond a family. Australia is known for its fantastic weather and clear skies meaning that camping should be an optimal choice when going to Australia. Some camping sites are featured on the site. The first is Coral Coast Tourist Park; this is located in Carnarvon and has features such as a pool and a BBQ area.Overall, Australia is a beautiful place to visit and can be even more beautiful when camping and actually experiencing Australia from a rural perspective.

Ever had the desire to quit your lame 9 to 5 job, tell your boss to shove it, pack up and start traveling the world?

All of us have had that desire at one point! The thing that stopped you was probably the same thing that stops most people: money.

“How will I pay for my flights, food, lodging, transportation, yada, yada, yada,” you asked yourself.

Don’t let these concerns bother you too much, because there is an underground, growing group of travelers who are utilizing some simple but hidden techniques to make significant incomes while traveling.

Here’s an overview of how we make money traveling and by landing travel jobs:

Underground Travel Income Method #1 – Traditional Travel Job - Hold a job that either a) pays for us to travel or b) is located in the place we wish to travel to. This is the lowest paying and most complicated method of all, but is the most commonplace.

Common jobs that pay for travels are for professional speakers, salespeople, package couriers, flight attendants, travel nurses/doctors, conservationists, cruise ship workers, etc.

Travel jobs located in the places we wish to go to can be any of the above, but also are specific to the location we travel to. There are some FUN jobs overseas that are looking for foreign workers!

Underground Travel Income Method #2 – Travel Writing – Travel writing jobs for magazines are more common than you may imagine. However, there are LOADS of other ways to write as you travel and make money, including blogging, picking up projects from sites like Elance and Guru, and writing travel guides, both online and offline.

Underground Travel Income Method #3 – Selling Affiliate Products – Using a simple website, you can drive online traffic to a product that will be of interest to your online followers. Don’t be intimidated by this! It can be as easy as using your very own Facebook or Myspace profile. Affiliate products typically pay 50% to 75%, so you can make a very healthy income for selling just a few objects.

Underground Travel Income Method #4 – Filming Your Adventures – If you’ve got the camera out and you’re taking pictures, why not switch it to ‘film’ mode and make money from it? You simply make a video of your destinations using iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, then use your videos to create a customer base!

Underground Travel Income Method #5 – Podcasting – If filming scares you off or intimidates you, you can make an iTunes podcast. It is easier than ever to get listed in iTunes and there’s a HUGE audience of podcast listeners. Simply talk about the places you visit two or three times a week and watch how your following grows… and how your bank account grows!

Underground Travel Income Method # 6 – Ebay – The common misconception about Ebay is that you have to sell a physical product to make money. Here’s the trick: You can set up a fulfillment house to ship your product (or hire your little sister or the neighborhood kid). All you have to do is create your Ebay post from an internet café and collect the money!

Take any one of these six ‘travel job’ methods, and there are hundreds of travelers all over the world making more money than they would at a regular ‘job…’ and they’re living it up at exotic, world-class destinations. Take your pick, and take action on the ideas here!

Tales told cannot really port rail reality. It takes more than peeping from a car to connect with a town you are visiting for the first time. sincerely, it is easier to understand an unfamiliar place by walking through the place. I am not talking about quick steps but slow or moderate step that will allow you to take note of simple details.

Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, Travel 50 and Beyond Magazine and Vacations Magazine are three of the travel industries leading magazines. Each of these three magazines offers a slightly different perspective on travel and ways to save money while traveling.

Conde Nast Traveler Magazine is a travel magazine designed for the travel connoisseur. Conde Nast Traveler Magazine is written with style and quality of travel in mind. It provides candid advice on how to travel in foreign countries and maps that illuminate where you can travel to.

Conde Nast Traveler Magazine is for the person who is a well seasoned traveler not for the casual tourist. In Conde Nast Traveler Magazine you will be able to read well written articles from travelers that present the truth about travels in the U.S. and abroad.

In comparison Vacations Magazine is more about the glitz and glamour of travel. It features fun to visit tropical locations as well as great family destinations in the U.S. Vacations Magazine is oriented to give advice on saving money while traveling and how to make the most out of your vacation.

Vacations Magazine is well written and a great magazines for couples or families that want to travel and experience the tourist side of vacationing.

Travel 50 and Beyond Magazine is a combination of the two magazines above with the over age 50 traveler in mind. Travel 50 and Beyond Magazine has great ideas and tips on getting senior discounts on airfares, rental cars, hotel stays and local attractions. Travel 50 and Beyond Magazine also features great articles on undiscovered locations for quick easy weekend getaways as well as extended vacations.

With the help of Travel 50 and Beyond Magazine you will be able to plan beautiful driving vacations for travel in your RV or for road trips in the car with fantastic hotels at each destination.

Conde Nast Traveler Magazine is the most expensive of the three magazines compared here. Conde Nast Traveler Magazine cost around .00 for a full year’s subscription and is perfect for the distinguished traveler.

Vacations Magazine and Travel 50 and Beyond Magazine both have a cost of around .00. Both these magazines are well written and best for a more causal tourist approach to travel.

 What is “Responsible Travel?”

 By: Wiser World Travel

What is “Responsible Travel?”

You can enjoy adventure, nature and/or culture, and be socially and ecologically conscious. Responsible travel is about having fun, while also giving back. It is ethical travel that strives to reduce negative impacts of our journey while creating long term benefits to the environment, local people, and their communities.

“Eco-Green-Sustainable-Responsible Travel.” Really? Just How “Green” is Green?
By Peggy Lichter President, Wiser World Travel

The last time I checked, I could place my company on an online eco-directory for 0, no proof necessary as to my sustainable practices (other than professing my “green-ness.”) As a tour operator, I can convey my environmental concern by asking travelers to offset their carbon emissions ? at their expense. How do we determine if our journeys support local communities? Are we staying in locally owned accommodations, eating in local restaurants, being educated by local guides, better insuring financial benefits to host communities? How do we know if negative impacts of travel are being minimized, that long term benefits to local people and communities will outweigh possible short term costs?

Are we being “greenwashed”? Just what is that, anyway? EnviroMedia Social Marketing says greenwashing is “when a company or organization spends more time and money claiming to be ‘green’ through advertising and marketing than actually implementing business practices that minimize environmental impact. It’s whitewashing, but with a green brush.”

Eco Practices?

I recently attended a conference in a U.S. city. The hotel that hosted the event belongs to a major chain, which touts its commitment to sustainable practices. They have been recognized twice as the Energy Star Partner of the Year for Excellence in Energy Management. Yet conference attendees were wearing extra layers of clothing to keep warm in the conference rooms due to the air conditioning setting; just think what energy could be conserved if the temperature was set even two degrees warmer.

Plastic cups wrapped in plastic were replaced daily. After using a thimble-full of shampoo and hair conditioner, the almost full bottles were removed and replaced with new ones. I don’t have to tell you how plastic and non-biodegradable products clog our earth, not to mention the waste of product. Is a “green” hotel one that asks guests to place towels on the floor if laundering is desired and guests can choose to not have sheets changed daily? While of course a plus for conservation, are these practices suggested because they are environmentally correct or primarily because they are visible, sustainable practice that positively affect the bottom line and the hotel’s image? And does conservation become the responsibility of the customer?

Questions to Ask

How do we know if tour operators providing great “eco” trips are “walking their talk”? What questions might we ask? Does the operator have any eco-certifications? Are you staying at locally owned and operated accommodations where the employees are from the local community? Are you eating at local restaurants and being guided by local experts? If on a tour, does the tour operator support sustainability programs in the communities/regions to which they go? Do they contribute to a carbon offset program? Does the operator and the accommodations that they support recycle and demonstrate energy efficiency when possible? Are travelers educated about the local culture and environment? Are they encouraged to conserve and recycle?

Perhaps we should do what British journalist Nick Rosen (off-grid.net) suggests regarding greenwashing, “. . . we have to adopt a new color: brown. Brown is the new green . . . Advertisers will never want to hijack such a color. Brown is a reminder of what we talk about when we talk about the Earth. It’s a reconnection with our own dirt . . .”

“Green” has become fashionable, and of course every little bit helps for whatever reason, even if it’s for financial gain. But over the long term, in order to sustain our earth with the least negative impact to it and to life, don’t we need to change our fundamental belief systems about the connectivity between all people and the earth? If we love to travel, by encouraging responsible travel practices, we can contribute to our world’s life span ? and not lose a bit of the fun, adventure, or excitement of new experiences! And if bottom lines are positively affected, it will happen.

About Wiser World Travel, LLC and Peggy Lichter, President

Wiser World Travel matches travelers to the most fitting, enjoyable, quality, and sustainable packaged and custom tours and itineraries offered by our ever-growing group of committed tour operators. We strongly believe that members of the travel industry have a responsibility to the environment and people of the world, and we intend to make sure that the travel providers within the Wiser World network meet the expectations set by our caring travelers.

Wiser World Travel was founded by Peggy Lichter in 2008. Peggy sought to use her business and entrepreneurial experience to make a positive impact on people and the global environment. Upon her travels she became enthused about sustainable tourism, and how through travel we all have the potential to contribute to the betterment of our world. Ultimately, her difficulty in verifying tour operators who “walk their walk” regarding responsible travel, combined with the lack of standardized sustainable criteria in the travel industry, led to the company’s inception.

Responsible Travel: Helping Now
By Reagen Lowrey

Scientists are no longer debating if climate change is occurring, as the devastating effects can already be seen globally. Nor is there any doubt that human activities are a major part of the problem.

So why is this important to you, fellow travelers? Well, if emissions continue to rise as currently projected, many of the places we like to visit will simply no longer exist. A 2005 study conducted by Sustainable Travel International found that the travel industry contributes about one third of the world’s climate damaging emissions. Are we saying that you should not travel? No, of course not. Not only does travel broaden our perspectives, but many economies in the developing world are dependent on it. Put simply, we believe the lesson to be learned is how to strike a balance.

Some members of the travel industry recognize their responsibility to curtail negative impacts of tourism; they are making efforts to create positive outcomes for the environment, local people and cultures, and raising awareness about the need for green alternatives and sustainability.

For the rest of us, it has never been more important to understand and implement our own responsible travel practices, and to support those travel providers and tour operators who are demonstrating such practices.

What exactly is “responsible travel”? It is ethical/conscious travel that strives to reduce negative impacts while creating long-term benefits to the environment, local people and their communities. It’s about having fun, while also giving back.

Go local. Protect the environment. Respect cultures and customs. Offset carbon emissions. These are just some of the many things you can do as a responsible traveler.

About the Author

Responsible Travel Tips To Enhance Your Journey . . .
Before You Leave

Choose a travel provider that best meets your needs and demonstrates best practices for responsible travel and sustainability.

Request to see your provider’s responsible travel policy.
Ask relevant questions, e.g., are local guides hired, are group sizes limited (to minimize environmental and social impact)? Are accommodations they use locally owned, do they purchase locally, recycle? Does the tour operator participate in a carbon offset program?

Be an informed traveler.

Learn a few words of the local language to be polite, e.g., hello, please, thank you.
Do as much research as you can via the internet and guidebooks to learn about the local culture and environment.
- Traveling with understanding and respect earns you respect
Recycle/leave as much excess packaging at home as you can, e.g., film boxes, plastic wrapping.
Consider your transportation options. Can you take a train rather than fly?
Offset your carbon emissions (visit carbonfund.org).
If traveling to developing countries, ask your tour operator or hotel what might be useful gifts for local people, e.g., pens, pencils, writing pads.
While You’re Enjoying Your Trip

Go local.

If looking for a guide, hire a local person or participate in a group that employs a local guide.
Purchase local food and products.
Eat in local restaurants rather than international chains.

Protect the environment.

Use public transportation, hire a bike, or walk when you can.
Avoid littering.
Stay on existing trails.

Conserve resources.

Use water sparingly.
Avoid wasting food.
Re-use towels and bed sheets.
Don’t litter.

Demonstrate respect for the local culture.

Be sensitive to cultural differences, and show respect for differences in customs, e.g., dress codes.
Understand the differences in concepts such as personal space and time, and with non verbal communication.
Avoid obvious displays of wealth or handing out of money, which may result in jealousy and resentment.
Understand bargaining; know when it is appropriate and when it is not.
Upon Your Return

Provide feedback to your tour operator. We can make a difference, creating positive impact towards environmental and economic sustainability, and to supporting local communities and cultures around the world!
